The Salem Witch Trials & The Case Against Christ

Do you believe in witches? Why not?

What can the Salem Witch Trials tell us about the resurrection of Jesus Christ?

Thursday, November 29
5:30 – 7:30pm
Rodda North 258
Sacramento City College

Hundreds of millions of people believe that Jesus came back from the dead. CSU, Sacramento Philosophy professor MATT MCCORMICK presents a decidedly unpopular view —he forcefully argues that the central tenet of Christianity, the resurrection of Jesus, is false.

In his recently published book, Atheism and the Case against Christ, he undermines Christianity and theism at their foundations; provides a powerful model for better critical reasoning; and builds a compelling case for atheism. McCormick offers persuasive arguments that are accessible, thoughtful, and new.

The presentation will be followed with a lively Question & Answer session.

April 26 Event: Greta Christina on Atheism and Sexuality

Sac City Freethinkers is proud to present

GRETA CHRISTINA
ATHEISM & SEXUALITY
TUESDAY, APRIL 26
6pm, Student Center
Sacramento City College

Free to all LRCCD students, faculty and staff, $5 at the door for general public

TOPIC: Atheism and sexuality. The sexual morality of traditional religion tends to be based, not on solid ethical principles, but on a set of taboos about what kinds of sex God does and doesn’t want people to have. And while the sex-positive community offers a more thoughtful view of sexual morality, it still often frames sexuality as positive by seeing it as a spiritual experience. What are some atheist alternatives to these views? How can atheists view sexual ethics without a belief in God? And how can atheists view sexual transcendence without a belief in the supernatural?

GRETA CHRISTINA: Greta Christina is one of the most widely- read and well- respected bloggers in the atheist blogosphere. She was recently ranked by an independent analyst as one of the Top Ten most popular atheist bloggers. She is the regular atheist correspondent for AlterNet, the online political magazine with over 1,200,000 hits a week, and has been writing about atheism and skepticism for her own cleverly-named Greta Christina’s Blogsince 2005. Her writing has appeared in numerous magazines, newspapers, and anthologies, including Ms., Skeptical Inquirer, the Chicago Sun-Times, and the anthology Everything You Know About God Is Wrong. She has been writing professionally since 1989, on topics including sexuality and sex-positivity, LGBT issues, politics, culture, and whatever crosses her mind. She is an experienced and entertaining public speaker, who has been doing public speaking for many years.

BONUS OPENING ACT: SacFAN’s very own Keith Lowell Jensen will also perform a special set of stand-up comedy before Greta speaks… so don’t be late!

This event produced by the Sac City Freethinkers student club, with help from the Secular Student Alliance.

IMPORTANT DATES COMING UP:

We will be holding a SPECIAL ELECTION for a new President and Treasurer. Because of the departure of our president elect and officer requirements, these offices are now vacant and need to be filled asap. New elections will be held at our first Fall semester meeting:

(Cosmetology bldg at NW corner of campus)

If you are interested in being considered for either office, please let us know by replying to this message. These are official, campus recognized offices, so there are rules about serving: The elected student officers must have a min. of 5 units at SCC during the Fall and Spring semester, and must maintain a 2.0 GPA.

September will be very busy, so we need your help

There are at least three events (possibly 4 or 5) the club is planning to participate in our first six weeks. We will need lots of volunteers and support, so please come to the meetings and join in.

What’s the big deal?

What’s the big deal if “under God” is in the Pledge of Allegiance? So
what if the motto is “In God we trust”? Does it really hurt anyone if
“so help me God” is added to the president’s oath of office?

At the March general meeting, noted atheist activist Mike Newdow will
discuss these matters and how his three current lawsuits (challenging
each of those practices) revolve around that question.

Light refreshments will be served. Traditionally, a post-meeting get-
together is held as well for those wishing further social interaction.
Hope to see you there!

Sunday, March 8, 1:30 pm. Sierra 2 Center, Community Room 10, 2791
24th Street, Sacramento, CA 95818-3255. Email info@aofonline.org or
phone 916.447.3589. Sponsored by Atheists and Other Freethinkers
the event is free and open to the public.
