LOCATION & PARKING INFO: LRC-105 is on the first floor of the Learning Resource Center – the Library building at the south end of the central quad. Members of the public can park in the parking lots and garage on the northeast corner of campus by purchasing a $1 day pass at any of the blue kiosks in the lots. There is also free evening street parking on Freeport Blvd. near the northwest corner of campus.Please arrive early to park and walk to venue.

Well, the end of the world did NOT happen on May 21, 2011. So we figured that meant GOD really wanted the Sac City Freethinkers around for another semester (well, at least until October 21).

We’re starting the semester with club meeting on Friday at 1pm at Espresso Metro. We’ll see if that works for enough people, but we may change it in a few weeks.

Our “Atheism & Sexuality” event on Tuesday turned out great! Thanks to Greta Christina and Keith Lowell Jenson for putting on an excellent educational and humorous talk.

We did not get to record, but fortunately Greta was recorded giving the same lecture at Skepticon 3 and that video is on YouTube for your viewing pleasure.

TOPIC: Atheism and sexuality. The sexual morality of traditional religion tends to be based, not on solid ethical principles, but on a set of taboos about what kinds of sex God does and doesn’t want people to have. And while the sex-positive community offers a more thoughtful view of sexual morality, it still often frames sexuality as positive by seeing it as a spiritual experience. What are some atheist alternatives to these views? How can atheists view sexual ethics without a belief in God? And how can atheists view sexual transcendence without a belief in the supernatural?

GRETA CHRISTINA: Greta Christina is one of the most widely- read and well- respected bloggers in the atheist blogosphere. She was recently ranked by an independent analyst as one of the Top Ten most popular atheist bloggers. She is the regular atheist correspondent for AlterNet, the online political magazine with over 1,200,000 hits a week, and has been writing about atheism and skepticism for her own cleverly-named Greta Christina’s Blogsince 2005. Her writing has appeared in numerous magazines, newspapers, and anthologies, including Ms., Skeptical Inquirer, the Chicago Sun-Times, and the anthology Everything You Know About God Is Wrong. She has been writing professionally since 1989, on topics including sexuality and sex-positivity, LGBT issues, politics, culture, and whatever crosses her mind. She is an experienced and entertaining public speaker, who has been doing public speaking for many years.

Student Government Elections — Get out the vote!

Tuesday 4/12 and Wednesday 4/13 are ASG Election Days.

All SCC students are encouraged to get out and vote for the candidates for next school year’s Student Government.

Though not an official endorsement, it might interest you to know that one of the candidates for ASG President, Leedell Williams, is a Freethinker who has participated in a number of club meetings and events in the past. He’s a good guy!

So get out and VOTE!
